Ireland has long been a global leader in aviation. We believe that we can also be at the forefront of developing a more sustainable aviation industry. SAF manufacturing technology is considered cutting edge, initial analysis indicates that a SAF project would play a lead role in integrating the energy industry with a possible future circular bioeconomy for Ireland, significant research and development opportunities exist in the space, and the project would help consolidate Ireland as a centre for research excellence.
As other low-carbon options such as hydrogen and electrification continue to develop, there is a potential to offset some fossil Jet fuel use with alternative sources. However, due to the limitations of battery energy density and a range of issues with Hydrogen, medium and long-haul aircraft will continue to need liquid hydrocarbons for the foreseeable future. Ireland’s location on the periphery of Western Europe combined with our close social and economic ties with the United States ensures the need for medium and long-haul aircraft at Ireland’s airports.
As a sector in its infancy, cross-departmental and cross-sectorial collaboration is vital to secure the rapid development of a SAF market that is needed to ensure future mandates can be met.
